The American Academy of Ophthalmology "Academy" is a professional medical association of ophthalmologists. It is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Its membership of 32,000 medical doctors includes more than 90 percent of practicing ophthalmologists in the United States as well as over 7,000 members abroad. The Academy's stated mission is "to protect sight and empower lives by serving as an advocate for patients and the public, leading ophthalmic education, and advancing the profession of ophthalmology.
On January 2019 a former employee wrote a review for Indeed about how was working at the American Academy of Ophthalmology: It deeply upsets me to say this organization is defunct of an energetic culture. This is largely due to management that is often disengaged and thinks meetings will fix everything. Little collaboration and forward thinking. The employees are solid but they are scorned on when they exhibit any energy or ideas.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I worked at American Academy of Ophthalmology full-time for more than 5 years Cons: Horrible middle managers who are "lifers" (especially in Clinical Education department) Redundant work in old-school cubicles No snacks/lunches (again - very old school) Stifling bureaucracy and politics Zero transparency Extreme siloing Very hierarchical and no room for advancement because middle managers never leave Low pay (since leaving I've literally DOUBLED my salary without adding to my workload or taking away from my work-life balance in any way) Not very exciting work - in the SF Bay Area there many other far more exciting, interesting, and better-paying opportunities, including at both non-profit and for-profit places dedicated to "doing good""
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I have been working at American Academy of Ophthalmology full-time for more than 5 years Cons: * Top management with exceptionally large ego * Declining employee benefits - AKA almost everything is outsourced to ADP * Competency is not required for employment - but, either you obey or you are managed out * Handful of competent senior managers * Regimented work hours that promotes inefficiencies * Plenty of demotivated employees * They ask you to fill out so-called anonymous employ survey (they give you unique user ID and password - how dumb do they think employees are!!!) but they don't do anything about the results except padding the senior management on the shoulder * vVery little chance of promotion unless you are a personal favorite - again, competency and high ratings do not have value"

The organization talks a good game, rewards mediocrity and works most staff to the point of burn out. Do not come here with your grant idea's - they are not interested. Do not come here with the idea that you will advance, those positions have been occupied for so long you would need to wait for someone to retire in order to find a vacancy."

An old company with an old mindset and old structure. Certain middle-managers who have been there for 15+ years are crazy but have diplomatic immunity. If you don't care about sitting in the same cubicle doing the same thing for two decades, this is a good place to work."

People who do grow their career here do so by staying for 7-10 years in one position (and no, there is no extra challenge within these positions) and therefore are not the innovative and motivated type of people who a company should seek to fill those positions. "Lifers" are real here, and not in a good way. Dental insurance is definitely not comparable to the norm. Pay isn't great, and the "raises" are laughable. Also, there is huge inequity in the unofficial perks (ie. working from home, leaving early, professional education, etc.) While there are a few really impressive people in the mix, they are rare - if you are intelligent, you are likely to outgrow them quickly. You'll quickly feel the "if you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." If you're bright and motivated, this is not the place for you."

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I have been working at American Academy of Ophthalmology full-time for more than a year Cons: Noticeable distinction between higher-ups, who make $100,000 to a million dollars a year, and the the little people, who make below market rate. I was appalled to learn my salary, which admittedly is below market rate, is what some people in the office make in their yearly bonus :( And yet, there is constant complaining that the organization is losing money. How about some of the staff cut their 5-figure bonuses? 1-2% yearly “Merit Increases” for low-totem people is an insult. Nice office, but located in Ghiradelli Square, which is difficult to get to if you don’t live in the immediate area. You are required to work for a week at their annual meeting, which takes place in different cities. This requires lots of schmoozing, standing, walking, and wearing very ugly purple uniforms. You are fed cafeteria food, and sometimes it's not too bad. You will also be rewarded with a decent meal at a restaurant. It makes sense they would make the peons work at these meetings though, so that they can save money that needs to go towards the salaries and bonuses of the Directors, VPS, etc. This is an old-fashioned place. If you still have a little life left in you, you might start to feel stifled here."
